Friday night buddy Buzzeltov aka Buzz-T and myself gonna play some urban dance music on hip hop’s left hand side. Unexpected yet fun-loving. Buzz did a short but extra fine mix to draw a rough picture what to expect. Check it out and come along. It’s happening at the basement at Good Old Days, the new little but loveable dance spot in the middle of schanze.

Totally look forward to this one. DJ Craze aka Crazeroni comes back to town. The Assoto-Kanye-West-Aftershow with him a couple of years ago was legendary. Expect one of the greatest DJ on earth to decently rock the party and throw in a couple of nice turntable performances in between. Support by my man Saint One and yours truly. It’s going to be packed, so show up early.

Some more inspiration needed? Check these goodies:

NYE in Hamburg without soulful music which is not in the sphere of four-to-the-floor? Nonsense. Rap, nusoul and the likes, without chart-shiz and ringtone-terror but with everything else that moves your hips and touches your soul? Absolutely. The secret recipe for NYE is to come to the Loft at Neidklub. You’ll get extra warm atmosphere, good drinks and an intimate dancefloor situation. Music provided by yours truly the whole night. Open doors are at 0:30.

Entrance – 10€ (Neidloft-only – Neidklub downstairs has separate program and fee)
Pre-Sale – 27th, 28th, 29th und 30th Dec from 14-18 pm, and 31st from 12-18 Uhr.
Open Doors – 0:30
Music – Clap To This (Ex-Assoto Sounds) – Soul and Rap and Good Music All Night
Neidloft – Reeperbahn 25, Neidklub, 2nd Floor

I was holding this post back for quite some time, because I didn’t have the time to digititalize the  ’Nuthin’ But Love 12” ‘. Now here we go: The Heavster is gone. In Germany Heavy D is mostly known for his 90s chartbreaker ‘Now That We Found Love’ and hopping around in bright colour rainsuits in that video. But of course he was way more than that. As Talib Kweli put it shortly yet precisely on Twitter the other week: “Without Heavy D ain’t no Diddy. Ain’t no Biggie. Ain’t no Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Recognize. RIP.”

My favourite Heavy D. tunes, besides “Mr. Big Stuff”, “We Got Our Own Thang”, “Is It Good To You” “Who’s The Man?”, “Blue Funk”, “Don’t Curse”, “Sex Wit You”, “Black Coffee” and the late “Listen” with Q-Tip and Dilla are these two Joints:

The Pete Rock produced Original Version of “Got Me Waiting” has been curiously replaced by a mediocre Remix on the “Nuttin’ But Love”-LP and is only available as Bonus Track or 12″-Single. The Kid Capri produced ”Nuttin’ But Love” is one of my all time favourite party joints. The commercial 12″ was totally whack, it didn’t include an instrumental nor the original version but again a mediocre remix. That’s why I put the Instrumental up. Sidenote: I think Capri just provided the sample – the 1983 synth-pop track Ecstasy by Endgames - and the trackmasters Tone and Poke handled most of the producing and mixing. As a bonus the excellent ‘Nuttin’ But Love’-Remix by the nice guys from Cookin’ Soul.

The Fab is not only one of the greatest freestyle-dancers, – actors and -comedians I know, but also a real good guy. Plus he’s doing this amazing event at the Ü&G where he’s about to sing and I’m happy to spin some records. Soulful is the way it’s going to be.

What a beautiful combination. I need this kind of music on grey November days. And Snoop needs that kind of beats, he’s not 21 anymore. And good to see the Roots are back. Can’t wait to listen to the whole Betty & Roots LP.

The Digable Planets are one of my alltime favourite groups, despite they only released two albums and a handful of other tracks. ‘Rebirth of Slick‘, ‘Where I’m From‘, ‘Nickel Bags‘, ‘9th Wonder‘ and ‘Dial 7‘ –  quite a lot of excellent singles for just two albums. So glad we managed to do a concert with this charismatic combo in form of an Assoto live special back in 2005, some years after their heydays.

If you ever wondered what they did in between: Ladybug Mecca did an excellent single with Raheem DeVaughn in 2007 and a mediocre follow up LP. To the best of my knowledge that was about it. Doodlebug is releasing some stuff from time to time, last single just dropped on Soulspazm. Alright – but nothing too special. I always had the impression that Ishmael Butterfly was the creative mastermind of the group and his recent activities seem to prove this. His mysterious project ‘Shabbazz Palaces’ is awesome yet strange transboundary underground music. If you like distorted and disoriented dark as well as crispy beats with in-depth lyrics, this is it. Check the video above, the Album ‘Black Up‘ and this excellent article explaining the project.

Bonus: Here’s a quite unknown ’93 gem from the Coneheads-Soundtrack (yes, the unbelievable cruel movie with Dan Aykroyd).

Saturday I play with my homie Buzz-T aka Blogbuzzter aka Buzz-A-Buzz at the 3 years celebration of the back in the days party series organized by my mates from Nordskills. Playing with Buzz is always a pleasure – you can expect a lot of 90s rap music and feel-alikes from now and then from us.

Strong new track and video by M.E.D. aka Medaphoar, which I think is the strongest rapper on Stones Throw. Remember classics like ‘Nightlife‘, ‘Can’t Hold On‘, the Just Blaze produced ‘Get Back‘ and the Dilla banger ‘Push‘. His last Single ‘Classic b/w Where I’m From‘ with Karriem Riggins (where has he been at?), Kweli and Aloe Blacc was on heavy rotation on my headphones. Be sure to check out his new longplayer also called ‘Classic‘.
